It's been a while.
I still haven't decided if I'm going to keep this blog up.
But we got a scanner and I thought I would share a bit of my youth.
I'm not sure what grade this is. My guess would be kindergarten or 1st grade.

You might be able tell that Avery has a bit of red in his hair. Especially when it's clean. It's even more evident when we are out. Better lighting, I think.
I have decided to count the times that somebody asks:

"Is that his natural hair color?"

The count currently stands at two. Direct quote on both.
I should probably start figuring out a cute but not rude reply.
How about:

"No, it's Clairol #9 for babies and toddlers."
or
"No, it's on sale at Walgreen's."

Now I know the color is a bit surprising. And I know that's not what the person meant but still....
It's almost, not really but almost, like asking if he's mine.
I also know not to take offense, that the person is just commenting but still....
It's a little queer what people say out loud.

Lost and Found, part 2

Last week I lost my cell phone.
I knew where and when I lost it. At the park sometime between 2-3 o'clock in the afternoon. The next morning I went to go look fo it. Since I didn't have Griff w/ me, no luck.
Total bummer.
I suspended my service (relieved to find out that no calls were made) and began researching phones.
I don't really believe in luck. I'm more of a karma person. So I must have done something good because some nice people found my phone and returned it to me.
My faith in humanity was restored.
They had found it at the park. They even tried to hunt me down by calling my service provider. But had no luck there because I had already suspended my service. So using my address book, my mother-in-law was contacted.
Isn't that nice?

So nice that I baked them cookies. Not just any cookie but raspberry shortbread. At least 2 pounds of yummy, buttery, sweet goodness.

Griff in his woolen socks.
I am definately NOT pleased that it is cold enough for wool socks. Although handknit wool socks (sweaters for my feet) make it a tad barely more tolerable.

Knitting lesson learned last night while watching "Click":
Do not try to wind lace weight yarn without someone else holding said yarn. Having to wind lace yarn might hinder future lace projects.

Lost and Found, part 1

This is Herman. He is our hermit crab. Pretty boring as he is nocturnal. He usually looks like this.

Sometime before Sunday night Mr.Herman escaped from his fish tank. There is a smallish hole on the top from when we had fish. It's usually covered. When Herman saw an opportunity he took it.
Hermit crabs are pretty low maintainence. Food and water, in a dish and little spritz from time to time. Herman's disappearance was discovered when finally somebody (me) decided to give the poor crab some water.
I made Bri look everywhere in and around the tank. I hate finding dead animals. Fish, cats....He was not to be found. We prepared Griff for the worst. A fall from that height was sure to kill. I dreaded finding Mr.Herman by his stink. Secretly I was gratefully we were down one pet.
I don't consider myself a particularly lucky person. But Griff is. So it was no surprise when he found Herman Monday morning moments before my husband stepped on him. He found his way across our front room. I guess Herman is lucky too.

Baby Hat

I've been on a tear finishing projects. It's either because I'm looking forward to starting my 1st major shawl project, Icarus. Or I'm a little nervous about it therefore putting off casting it on. Here's a baby hat that was a lesson in gauge for me. It took the 3rd try to get it right.

The middle size was gifted right before I remembered I wanted to take a picture of hats as a group. The 1st hat fits a one year old. The middle a 6 mos old . The last a newborn.

Poor kid.

The shawl pattern from the last post is lace pattern #1 (page 69) from Interweave Knits summer issue. I just added a garter stitch border. I also slipped the 1st stitch for an even edge.

Stupid Shawl

It's been forever since my last post. Sorry.
The shawl that I had previously mentioned (May 18) is kicking my butt.
I wish I was exaggerating if I said I've started it at least 20 times now. 3 times just tonight!!!
I should just blame the pattern.
Come on, Lion Brand is not know to have brilliant patterns.
I should be smart enough to move on.
But no...My irrational brain says I'm smart enough to figure it out and teach that shawl/pattern a lesson.
I'll keep you posted.

Italian Meringue Buttercream

One of my favorite things to make.
Sugar, egg whites, butter... a little cooking...a lot of mixing...
And you get a bowl of smooth creamy goodness.
Nothing like the grainy, coat your mouth, too sweet stuff you get at the grocery store.
I could go on and on......

Here's the b-day cake I made w/ it.

Italian Buttercream:
makes 4 cups

1 1/2 cup sugar
5 egg whites
pinch cream of tartar
1# cold butter, cut up
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine sugar w/ about 3 cups of water. Cook to 240 degrees.
While sugar is cooking, whip whites to soft peaks w/ tartar.
With mixer on, slowly stream cooked sugar into whites.
Continue to whip until mixture is cooled.
Add butter slowly. Keep whipping.
It will look soupy until all of the sudden poof...
Everything is incorporated and yummy goodness has been achieved.

Two new projects

I've gone from not knitting anything for a couple of weeks to casting on 2 projects this past weekend. (My apologies to Kris, I was very distracted company.)

1st project: Socks for Griff. I've finished one already! (Less than one week. I've been a little obsessive.) I used the Yarn Harlot's basic instructions in her "Knitting Rules!" book. I've decided that I like knitting without a pattern. I think that's one of the reasons the sock knit up so quickly. I'll need to rip out the toe and make the foot a little longer. It fits perfect now but I'm sure his foot will grow by the time it's cold enough to wear wool socks. I'll have to take a pic w/ Griff modeling.

2nd project: Shawl for Brenda. If I can get it done in time it will be a June birthday present. It's a diamond lace pattern. It's not going as quickly as the socks. But I do like how it's knitting up. For some reason the yarn looks purple in the picture. It's more of a heather red.

It is almost 11:00 PM on Monday, May 8th. This time last year I was deciding if my labor was far enough along to be taken to the hospital.
I'm feeling a little emotional.
I don't remember if I felt this way for Griff's 1st b-day.
I know. I know. Every baby is different.
But I'm still surprised be HOW different this experience is.
I know he's my last.
I'm buzier. I'm working more. Sometimes I feel like I'm too busy to enjoy him like Griff.
Or is it that it's not new?
I just can't believe it's already been a year.

I've decided to knit this monkey. Minus the wardrobe. It's for Avery's 1st birthday. It's slow going. Not even enough for a pic. And I can't decide what contrasting color to use. He's going to be this blue. Should his face and paws be white, grey, or turquoise? White will show too much dirt I think.
Bri doesn't even care it give his opinion. He's bitter it's not a leprechaun for him.
There are 16 pieces. I've done 2. I don't think I'll be done by Sunday.

Here are my boys at Easter. I think at one point in my life I vowed not to dress my kids in matching outfits. I'm glad I threw that out the window.

Cheesecake update:
On 1st try I was a little disappointed. I thought it tasted plain and nothing special. But I think that was do to the fact that my tastes were already overwhelmed by Easter dinner i.e. I shouldn't have been eating anything else.
But...as a little something while watching Brokeback Mountain, it was very tasty. The caramel flavor was nice and subtle. My hubby enjoyed it at all tastings.

As for the movie, I really liked it. It was a little on the long side. And I wish there wasn't sooo much hype, definately a distraction. But very well acted and filmed. Very Ang Lee. I have to say I was surprised. I expected my reaction to be more neutral. Ennis is a great tragic character.

Second sock syndrome.....
I thought I was immuned. I had heard of it. Wasn't sure if I believed the hype. I cast on the 2nd sock immediatly. Only took 2 tries. I usually need to cast on a project 3-4 times until I get it right. Knit the cuff, leg , heel, no problems.
Then whamo, SSS, picked up stitches for the instep, miscounted somewhere, a total mess. My inexperienced self tried to fix it but ended up ripping back to the heel flap. Reknitting the heel became problematic, twice. Or was it thrice?
So..lesson learned. SSS is not just about casting on the pair. But the false sense of security. Feeling clever from completing the 1st sock does not guarantee 2nd sock success.

Is it wrong?
I've been wanting a ball winder forever. I couldn't bring myself to buy one.
So I asked for my b-day. My lovely mother-in-law obliged.

A lot of times I will want and want and want something only to be

After the torure of having 8 seven year olds at my house for my son's party,

Bad Bad Bad Day

Have you ever had one of those days you wish you could reset like a video game? The last twelve hours have not been good to me.
Avery decided that sleep was not his friend. No matter what I did for him; sing, rock,pat or jiggle. Finally at 2:30ish AM he cried himself to sleep. Not feeling good about my mothering skills.

After breakfast Avery pinched his finger in our kitchen cabinet door. Right underneath the hinge. Feeling pretty low.

Now this is plenty to put me over the edge. Especially w/ no sleep. But wait there's more.
While I'm freaking out on the floor trying to assess and comfort Avery. My cat Shadow attacks me. Now I'm not prone to exaggeration. She bit and scratched my hand. And while I was asking her what the hell her problem was she latched on to my leg.

Bleeding, bruised and sleep deprived is not a good way to start the day.
I'm crawling into bed now.

I have been completely uninspired. My house is messy. OK. Messy is not the word. It looks like someone took my house and shook it like a snow globe. Stuff helter skelter everywhere.
So...I have a hard time knitting or doing anything crafty without guilt. All I've got is two squares for Warm Up America. We are knitting afgans for charity.
And every project I've started I've had to frog. Socks and a cabled handbag. I am having issues w/ gauge. Even when I swatch. Grrr.

Some of you may or may not know that I enjoy knitting. I know how very old lady of me.
Here is a sample sock. A sample just to see if I like the process of knitting a sock. Turns out I do. It's a little big to be for Avery so I probably won't knit it's mate.
So...I've become this person waiting for my wool yarn to arrive by mail so I can hand knit my own socks. I'm envisioning warm toasty feet.

Here is one of my Christmas presents. Isn't it pretty? I'm itching to use it. But part of me feels the need to break it in w/ a perfect recipe. Eh, I'll probably make salsa for the Bears game on Sunday. Go Bears!!

Killer Salsa: Tomatoes, Onions, Jalepenos, Fresh Cilantro, Garic, Lime and Salt
That's all you need. Everything is chopped. Quantities aren't listed because it's basically by taste. I chop everything seperately and mix in a bowl to taste. Start with the tomatoes and decrease as you go down the list. Be careful with the cilantro. If you don't like a strong taste just use the leaves and not the stems. And the usual warning of don't touch your eyes after handling the peppers not unless you're into fire eyes.

My husband received season one as a gift for his birthday and every night we've been watching 2-3 episodes. If we had the time we would watch the whole darn thing in one sitting. Against my better judgement I have started a blog. I needed some convincing. Thank you Kelly and Crystal. They have promised me that it would not be a time eater. Humph..We'll see about that. I am horribly inept at the computer. Things that should just take a few moments turn into hours. Ok I don't have hours...But usually ease turns into mush.
